2001 Gopher State ISC Travel League News

  Game summaries were compiled from line scores submitted by Travel League Commissioner Dennis Johnson.
  The first weekend of the Gopher State ISC Travel League took place on May 12-13 at Caswell Park in North Mankato, Minnesota. When the dust had settled and all action was over, 14 games and a forfeit had taken place. Fargo Imaging Solutions finished 5-1 while Junker’s Bar and Grill was 6-0, Geneva was 2-4, Jeraldine’s Bar of St. Paul was 1-5 and so was Scandia.
The next round of action will take place on June 9-10. Check the website for Dennis’ report. We’ll have it here.
Game 1 - Junkers beat Geneva 5-4 as the winner was Brian Sowers and the loser was Brad Elliott. Junker’s scored one in the second, two in the sixth and two in the seventh and then held off a Geneva rally in the bottom of the 7th for the win. Eric Lewis had a homer for Junker’s while Scott Collins was 3x4, Jeff Hohenstein was 2x4, Kyle Christensen was 2x4 and BJ Boom was 2x4. Geneva was led by Brian Elliott with a homer and Brett Richards with a homer.

Game 2 - Scandia bested Jeraldine’s Bar 4-2 as Chris Isascson got the win by scattering six hits. The loser, allowing nine hits was John Paitich. Scandia scored two big runs in the top of the 7th to take the win and was led by Chad Rogness with a homer, Dan Lindgren with a homer, Chad Junker at 2x4 and Jay Dougherty at 2x4. Jeraldine’s was led by Bod Hedrick at 3x3.

Game 3 - Junker’s clobbered Jeraldine’s 11-3 as Andy Van Wettering took the win but allowed 11 hits. Tim Murphy was the loser with Jeff Berglund in relief. Brent Jaeger was 4x4, Scott Collins was 2x4 with a homer while Eric Lewis homered again and was 3x4 and Kyle Christensen was 3x4 for the winners.

Game 4 - The IS Knights beat Scandia 20-0 in five innings on a no-hiter by Richard Carney. He fanned three. Mike Benson took the loss. Guy Carlson homered in a 1x3 effort, Greg Cascaes was 2x5, Tony Kunka was 2x5, Lamar Noriega was 2x4, Mike Geist was 2x4, Scott Deutsch was 2x5 with two homrers and Steve Baumgartner was 1x1 with a homer.

Game 5 - Junker’s took it to Scandia 8-1 with Andy Van Wettering getting his second weekend win on a three-hitter. Mike Benson took the loss. Scott Collins was hot again at 1x2 with a homer and 3 RBI while Kyle Christensen was 2x3 with a homer. Mike Benson helped his own cause by going 2x2 and driving in a run.

Game 6 - The IS Knights beat Geneva 14-2 as Pat Johnson bested Judd Berthiaume. Johnson fanned 11. Guy Carlson was 3x4, Dan Nessler doubled and homered, Tony Kunka homered and so did Jim Speral.

Game 7 - Junker’s nipped the IS Knights 1-0 as Rick Lang fanned 18 to get the win on a nifty two-hitter. Jim Speral took the loss. Scott Collins had two hits again for the Knights but it was not enough to overcome Lang’s mastery.

Game 8 - Geneva beat Jeraldine’s 12-5 with Brad Elliott taking the win over Jeff Berglund. Tomm Richards had two homers for Geneva, Brian Elliott had two homers and Scott McLeod was 3x3.

Game 9 - The IS Knights beat Jeraldine’s Bar 16-7 in this game with Richard Carney getting the win over Tim Paitich. Dan Nessler was 4x5 with a double, Dan Brekke was 3x4, Lamar Noriega was 2x3 with two homers, Greg Cascaes was 3x4 and Tony Kunka was 2x3 with a homer for the winners.

Game 10 - Junker’s beat Geneva 4-2 with Rick Lang picking up another win with 9 strikeouts. Judd Berthuiame absorbed another loss. Jon Lewis was 2x4 for Junker’s and Jim Harms went 2x3 while Brian Lammaers was 2x3. Geneva saw Brett Richards hit a two-run homer.

Game 11 - An 11-6 win for Junker’s over Jeraldine’s with Andy Van Wettering getting the win. Brian Sowers relieved him to get some work in. Jeff Berglund took the loss. A four-run sixth marked the difference for the winners. Junker’s were led by Brent Jaeger at 3x5 and a homer, Eric Lewis with a homer, Mike Wells at 3x5 with a homer, Scott Collins at 2x4 with a double and homer and Kyle Christensen at 2x4. The losers were paced by Al Lavelle at 2x4 with a homer and a double, John Paitich at 2x4 and Dan Marchio who homered.

Game 12 - The IS Knights beat Scandia 15-4 with Pat Johnson posting the win over Chris Isaacson. Rich Carney relieved Johnson. An eight-run first and seven-run second marked the game’s differential. Dan Brekke was 2x4 with a homer, Greg Cascaes homered, Tony Kunka was 3x4 with 5 RBI, Guy Carlson was 2x4 and Steve Baumgartner was 2x3.

Game 13 - Geneva was beaten by the IS Knights 8-3 as Jim Speral got the win over Brad Elliott with relief help from Kyle Ooslee. Tony Kunka doubled and homered for the winners while Scott Deutsch homered as well. Brad Richards homered for the losing team.

Game 14 - Jeraldine’s Bar beat Scandia 9-3 as John Paitich got the win over Jay Daugherty. A five-run sixth marked the difference. Don Marchio had two homers for Jeraldine’s while Chris Diethert was 2x3 and Ryan Benson went 2x3 while Dan Lindgren was 3x3 for the losers.

Game 15 - Geneva received a forfeit from Scandia due to an injured played in the final inning of the previous game leaving them with only eight players.

ISC Gopher State Travel League News - Weekend #2

The Gopher State ISC Travel League wrapped up it's 2001 season amid rain and a lack of umpires but ISC travel league commissioner Dennis Johnson did a great job of getting in the games that really counted.

The IS Knights, trailing Junker's Bar & Grill by a game after the first weekend of action made it through the second weekend without a loss while Junker's dropped two games, thus giving the IS Knights the league title and the berth to the ISC World Tournament in Eau Claire.

The final standings are:

Game 16 - Junker's beat Scandia 6-2 as Andy Van Wettering got the win on a three-hitter. BJ Boom was 2x4 with a double for the winners while Eric Lewis was 2x4 and Brian Lammers went 2x4 with a double and a triple. Junker's scored one in the first, one in the second, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the sevent en route to the win.

Game 17 - Geneva bat Jeraldine's 13-9 in a slugfest with Brad Elliott getting the win over Tim Murphy. Geneva scored six runs in the sixth to make the difference. Geneva's hitting attack was led by Brody Richards with three hits while Brian Elliott had two home runs and Judd Berthiaume had two hits.

Game 18 - The IS Knights nipped Jeraldine's 3-2 in this game with John Paitiah taking the win over Pat Johnson. Steve Baumgartner was 1x3 with a homer and two RBI for the winners while Scott Deutsch was 3x3 with a double and Bob Fleming was 2x3.

Game 19 - Scandia handed Geneva a 4-1 loss with Jay Daugherty beating Judd Berthiaume. Scott McLeod had two hits including a home run for Geneva. Berthiaume only allowed three hits but gave up two in the first, one in the fifth and one in the sixth in taking the loss.

Games 20-21-22 - Were all forfeits as Jeraldine's forfeited to Junker's, Scandia forfeited to the IS Knights and Scandia forfeited to Junker's.

Game 23 - The IS Knights beat Geneva 7-0 with Pat Johnson beating Judd Berthiaume as Johnson allowed only one hit. Jay Nessler was 2x3 with a homer for the Knights while Tony Kunka was 2x3, Steve Baumgartner had a two-run homer, Scott Deutsch was 2x3 and Lamar Noriega was 2x3. Brent Jaager had a double for Geneva's only hit.

Game 24 - The IS Knights, in a key matchup, beat Junker's 4-2 as Jim Speral got the win over Rick Lang. Tony Kunka had a triple with two RBI and was 2x3 for the winners while Steve Baumgartner was 1x2 with two RBI. Junker's was led by Brent Jaager's double. The Knights scored two in the first and two in the third to stake Speral to the lead.

Game 25 - A forfeit from Scandia to Geneva.

Game 26 - Junker's beat Geneva 9-6 as Andy Van Wettering got another win and this one was over Brad Elliott. BJ Boom was 3x4 with a triple for Junker's while Jeff Hohenstein was 3x4. Geneva's hitting was paced by Brian Elliott who was 3x4 with a homer.

Game 27-28 Forfeits with Jeraldine's forfeiting to the IS Knights and Geneva forfeiting to Jeraldine's.

Game 29 - This game pitted the IS Knights against Junker's again and once again the Knights prevailed, this time 6-3 as Jim Speral beat Rick Lang again. Speral tossed a three-hitter while Lang allowed eight hits. Jay Nessler was 2x4 with a triple, Tony Kunka was 2x4 with a triple and homer and Scott Deutsch was 2x4 with a home run and two RBI. BJ Boom was 2x3 with a double and a triple for Junker's.

Game 30 - Forfeit from Jeraldine's to Scandia.
